The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) celebrated the International Day of the Elderly by highlighting the country’s football icons from the 1970s and 1980s.

“FKF General Secretary Harold Ndege, together with other federation leaders, joined the football family at the University of Nairobi Grounds to celebrate the International Day of the Elderly,” FKF said in a statement posted on their official X account on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.

The event brought together East African football legends in a gathering that was both nostalgic and inspiring.

According to FKF, the occasion was designed to honour the invaluable contribution of these veteran players to the game and to the development of football in Kenya.

“The event brought together East African football legends of the 70s and 80s in a special occasion honouring their invaluable contribution to the game,” FKF said in a statement

For many attendees, the celebration provided an opportunity to reconnect with old teammates, share memories from past tournaments, and reflect on how the sport has shaped their lives and communities.

The Federation emphasised the importance of recognising the pioneers of the game, acknowledging that their dedication and skill laid the foundation for the thriving football scene Kenya enjoys today.

The ceremony included speeches, brief presentations highlighting historic moments in Kenyan football, and tokens of appreciation for the legends.

FKF’s gesture is part of a broader effort to celebrate and respect senior citizens, reinforcing the values of gratitude and recognition for contributions made in various fields, including sports.

By honouring these football veterans, the federation hopes to inspire younger players and officials to uphold the same passion, discipline, and commitment demonstrated by their predecessors.

The International Day of the Elderly, celebrated worldwide, focuses on recognising the contributions of older generations and ensuring they feel valued within society. FKF’s event in Nairobi reflected this mission, blending sports heritage with societal respect and celebration.
